Q: Jared Hubbard, thanks for your time and this interview, can you tell
something about your self, where you live and if you are married and have
children??
A: I'm 26 years old & I'm originally from Winona, MN but currently living
in Farmington, MN. I've been married for a little over a year. We don't have any
kids yet but we have a dog.
What did you do for work before coming a
pro poker player?
I was working part time in a flour mill while in college. I would usually
either load flour trucks or catch 50 lb bags of bran or flour off of a conveyor
belt & stack them on a pallet.
When did you started to play poker?
I used to play casually w/ my friends & I started playing online around 2005.
By 2006 I had quit my job at the flour mill & was playing part time for a living
while in school. 2007 was my 1st year as a full time pro.
Was there a
point where you decided that you'd make a run at going pro?
It was probably in late 2005 when I made the switch to short handed SNGs.
I was immediately crushing & I was pretty sure that I could make a lot of $
playing SNGs if I kept working on my game.
What poker books you have
red??
There's too many to name. I probably own 20-30 books. I don't read too
many books anymore unless it's a NL hold em book w/ rave reviews.
How
many hours a week do you spend at a table now? And Online?
Per week it really varies. I play almost exclusively online & last year I
played 1,577.65 hours, which would be equal out to about 39 40 hour weeks. I
believe 2008 was about the same. I'll probably play a little more than that this
year.
Where do you play online? what's your nickname online?
I
currently play on Cake Poker (jhub3000), Full Tilt (jhub30), & 1 other site where I
don't disclose my indentity. I also used to play a lot at Pokerstars (jhub3000)
& have played a little on some other sites.
When you play poker, do you
play more tournament or more cash games?
I play almost exclusively 6 max SNGs at all speeds.
Who are your
favourite or most admired player?
I'd have to say Phil Ivey. He's
simply a beast.
What's your favourite start hand?
If stacks
are shallow I'll take AA. If they're deep I'll take a suited connector or small
pair.
What's the highest price money you have ever won?
I
don't really have any big scores since I play SNGs so I'll just give you a
yearly figure. My best year was 2008 where I made over $577K. I used to have
records recorded for daily, weekly, & monthly but I don't keep track of that
anymore.
Did you ever played at the Amsterdam Masters?
No.
Is there a particular tournament you really wanna play and
win?
I rarely play big live events because it's tough to get in a big
sample size. I prefer to play games where I can get in a good sample size so
that it's more investing than gambling. That said, the money & endorsements that
go with winning the WSOP main event are unbeatable so it would be nice to win
that. However, you have to play it to win it & I've only played it once.
Have you ever stood up and flipped over a poker table because you were so
furious?
Definitely not....I've never broken anything while playing...the worst
I've done is shouts some curse words & that's in the comfort of my own home
while playing online & rarely happens
Whats the craziest thing you have
seen at the poker table?
I rarely play live so I really don't have much
to go off of. I guess when I was at the featured table of the main event some
guy folded & showed a full house to his opponent in a weird spot where his
opponent really didn't show too much strength throughout the hand. Mike Matusow
jumped out of seat & yelled wow! I know it's pretty uneventful.
What
advice would you give to the people who are watching poker on TV and playing
online, hoping to go pro?
Most people don't study enough. They just want to play, play, play. Until
you're really making enough money to play for a living you should probably be
studying more than you're playing.
